Are You On Facebook?
Using social network to generate traffic to your webiste can be very effective and a lot of fun as long as your floww some simple, but important, rules.
- Be Honest – You need to be real. The society that “lives” online is very shrewd and cautious. Initially, their guard is up whenever meeting someone new in an online setting. The best way to get someone to let their guard down is to be genuine.
- Approach it like a party – You want to approach your networking on Facebook (or MySpace if you prefer) like you are mingling at a party. At first it is all about casual, friendly conversation. If you hit it off with someone allow the conversation to evolve into more detailed topics. Think about it, when you meet someone at a party, you start off with the usual pleasantries and feel one another out. If there is that spark, you tend to relax and share more about yourself which usually involves what you do for a living.
- Be consistent - The key with many of these free traffic methods is consistency. You cannot expect to set up a profile on Facebook, join a few groups, friend a few people and see the traffic pouring into your site. You need to be “working” it on a regular basis.
- DO NOT SEND PEOPLE RIGHT TO YOUR BUSINESS WEBSITE – This is a BIG mistake that I see many people making. Create a blog and invite people to check it out. Again, follow the same rule of being honest and real. Take a look around here, I have some information about me on a personal level AND a business level. I offer solid, consistent information wit the genuine intention of helping people with their online business adventures.
- Stay focused – Inevitably, you will start to connect with old high school and college friends on Facebook. That is great and some of those people may be interested in your business, but stay focused. Facebook is fun and you can easily waste a lot of time socializing and looking at peoples pictures and such. When you sign in to your profile, remember why you are there and resist the temptation to chat and mingle with the your best friend. You are here to meet NEW people, people who may eventually be interested in your business.
Generating traffic using social networking can take a bit of time, but if you follow the rules I listed you will begin to see results. Have fun.
